Sarah Sedwick
Sarah Sedwick is an oil painter who makes her home in Eugene, Oregon. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1979, she began oil painting at age ten. In 2001, she earned a BFA from Maryland Institute, College of Art, with a focus on illustration and painting, and a minor degree in art history. Her work focuses on still life and portraiture, painting from direct observation. She is the author of the book Dynamic Still Life for Artists. Description
In this contemporary still life workshop, we’ll explore how color relationships, strong shapes, and expressive brushwork can bring everyday objects to life. Through guided demos and hands-on painting, you’ll learn to simplify what you see, loosen up your style, and create work that feels fresh, personal, and full of energy. All levels welcome!
Working with a limited palette, we’ll focus on the fundamentals of color mixing and value relationships to build confident, cohesive paintings. You’ll leave with a stronger understanding of how to make bold choices with both color and composition-and have fun doing it. Instruction is in oils, and acrylic painters are welcome.
Supplies
Palette – New Wave 11×16 white pad disposable palette, or similar
Palette knife – not a teeny one. You want to be able to scoop up a pile of paint with it. I like the RGM softgrip no. 45 (blue handle)
Rags or paper towels (blue shop towels are the best!)
Solvent: Gamsol 16 oz or larger
Medium: Gamblin Solvent-free gel, or medium of your choice
Containers for solvent and medium
Paint – I use M. Graham brand. Here is my split-primary palette. Substitutions are ok!
- titanium white
- alizarin crimson
- cadmium red (medium or light)
- ultramarine blue
- viridian
- cadmium yellow (medium)
- hansa yellow
- Optional colors: yellow ochre, ivory black
Viewfinder – I like the ViewCatcher by the brand ColorWheel.
Brushes – I use Princeton Aspen #2 round, and #6 flat. Please bring a size 8 or 10 flat brush to class. Any type of brushes that you like to use are OK.
Canvases or other painting surfaces:
- A pad of canvas paper such as Yes!, Arches oil paper, or Fredrix canvas pads (something for quick studies)
- Both a square canvas and a rectangular canvas or panel – a size you’d like to work on for about 3 hours. You’ll need at least two. 8×8, 10×10, 8×10, 9×12 or larger. I use Raymar 23SC smooth cotton canvas panels.

Easel and side table A standing travel easel.
(A French easel or plein air easel) *Some studios have easels for student use, but bring your own if you prefer.
