Roberta Loflin

Roberta Loflin obtained a BA in art history and theory from George Washington University, when she lived in the Washington, DC area for several years. She studied communication design at Northern Virginia Community College and color theory, watercolor, and drawing at the Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia.

Since moving to Baton Rouge, she has taught watercolor with the Art Guild of Louisiana, as well as Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at LSU, LSU Leisure Courses, private lessons, and with other art organizations. She has most recently become a published illustrator of children’s books.

Description

You will discover how to create vibrant secondary and subtle secondary colors, and beautiful neutrals, using a limited pallet. We’ll make several color charts, that you can use regularly. You’ll learn to use your colors effectively. Roberta will demonstrate the color mixing and discuss uses of colors and values. Participants will provide their own supplies for the workshop (see supplies list).

Supply List

This is my basic list of supplies. Please try to obtain professional quality paints. I like to use DaVinci and Grumbacher Academy (an excellent inexpensive brand to start). It may be necessary to use a website or catalog to obtain all needed supplies. I recommend Dick Blick, as they have a big watercolor supply selection. Mo’s Art Supply is the best local art store, 4573 Bennington Ave., 225-831-4870. If you are unsure about what to purchase, we will discuss supplies and answer any questions at the first class. Paints:

• Hansa Yellow (cool lemon)
• *Don’t buy Lemon Yellow (Nickel Titanate) it is chalky and opaque
• Aureolin or Gamboge (warm yellow)
• Permanent Rose Quinacridone (cool red) or Alizarin Crimson
• Cadmium Red or Perm. Red (warm)
• Ultramarine Blue
• Pthalo Blue
• Burnt Sienna
• Black (for value studies only)
• Any other colors you may have

Brushes:

• Please use synthetic brushes
• 1″ flat
• #4, #10 Rounds
• Any other size watercolor brushes you may have

Paper:

• Cold Press Watercolor paper 140lb
• I prefer Arches watercolor paper. I buy “full sheets” – 22” X 30” and I buy in bulk. (Full sheets can be cut or torn to make four to six single papers.)
• In recent years, watercolor paper has become very expensive. So, you CAN use Arches 90 lb paper. It is much thinner and prone to buckling but is quite good for use in class.
• Watercolor paper pads and lighter weight paper may be used for practice pieces.

Palette:

• Covered watercolor palette such as John Pike or Frank Webb Palette
