Description

When creating paintings from photos, don’t try to paint everything. Focus on the qualities, simple shapes and contrasts that will create a pleasing composition. Learn to take the information from a ho-hum snapshot and transform it into an impressive work of art.

Supplies

This is my basic list of supplies. I like to use American Journey and DaVinci paints. Winsor Newton is also a great brand and Grumbacher Academy is an excellent inexpensive brand to start. It may be necessary to use a catalog to obtain all needed supplies. If you are unsure about what to purchase, we will discuss supplies and answer any questions at the first class.

Paints:

  • Lemon or Hansa Yellow (cool yellow)
  • *Don’t buy Lemon Yellow (Nickel Titanate)
  • Permanent Rose Quinacridone (cool red)
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Any other colors you may have
  • Aureolin or Gamboge (warm yellow)
  • Cadmium Red or Perm. Red (warm red)
  • Pthalo Blue
  • Black (for value studies only)

Brushes, nylon synthetic (not animal hair):

  • 1″ flat
  • #4, #10 Rounds
  • I like Robert Simmons “White Sable” brand
  • Any other size watercolor brushes you may have
  • *Please note that cheap animal hair brushes are a waste of money and good animal hair brushes are way too expensive, look for nylon (synthetic) brushes

Paper:

  • Cold Press Watercolor paper (22″x30″) 140lb (I prefer Arches. I’ll have some available at the first class)
  • Watercolor paper pads and lighter weight paper may be used for practice pieces.

Palette:

  • Covered watercolor palette such as John Pike or Frank Webb Palettes

Miscellaneous (Most of these items are scavenger hunt finds):

  • 2 plastic water containers (1 quart size)
  • #2 pencil
  • Spray bottle for water
  • Ruler
  • Drafting or masking tape
  • 11″x14″ pad of drawing paper
  • Board to support watercolor paper
  • Personal photos you would like to work from
  • Kitchen sponge (cello)
  • 1 kneaded and 1 white eraser
  • Paper or cotton towels
  • Scissors
  • Brush holder
  • Plastic Table cover

Sources for purchasing supplies:

  • Michaels, 9616 Airline Hwy, Baton Rouge
