Elayne Kuehler
Baton Rouge native Elayne Kuehler has been painting for more than 38 years. A full-time artist and dedicated instructor, Elayne teaches art classes in her studio and conducts workshops nationally.
Elayne is a Full Member of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club in New York City, and a Signature Member of American Women Artists. She is also a member of the Portrait Society of America, an Associate Member of Oil Painters of America and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, a member of the Baton Rouge Art League, Associated Women in the Arts, The Art Guild of Louisiana, and the International Guild of Realism.
Her paintings have received awards at the international, national and regional levels and are held in private and corporate collections. Elayne has presented numerous one-person exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions and juried competitions.
Her work is represented by Studio de Chene in Baton Rouge and Gallery 600 Julia in New Orleans, as well as numerous other venues. Most recently she won the 2025 River Road National Competition.
Description
This class will be about how to draw with pencils and also with conte’ chalk. We will learn all about hatch marks for creating values and textures. I will demo the hatch marks and lines (and lack of lines) on portraits and on the textures of a tree and any other item you may have questions about.
In the morning of Day One I will begin the class introducing you to the various names and techniques of the hatch marks and how and when to use them as well as when not to use them. On the afternoon of Day One you will learn your hatch marks by practicing them. After you are comfortable with using your hatch marks, we will create your very own value scale using your knowledge of hatch marks.
In the morning of Day Two you will do a full-fledged pencil drawing. Bring photos of what you would like to draw. Be sure your photo has good values. Please don’t bring anything too complicated. Remember the valuable rule in fine art is ‘less is more’. On the Afternoon of Day Two you will do a full-fledged drawing using a black and a white conte’ pencil on brown paper. And here again please bring a photo you would like to draw that shows excellent values. A conte’ on brown paper will show dynamic values.
This class will also teach you about atmospheric perspectives because atmospheric perspective is also about values. You may want to consider this when selecting your photos to draw from.

- 8.5 x 11 or 11 x 14 sketch pad
- Conte’ Chalk: Black, White
- Brown craft paper (can be purchased at Michael’s) cut into sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 or 11 x 14. Cut before class please

- Notebook for notes
- Good Photos to use for your drawings – they must show good values.
