Description

Spend a Saturday afternoon with Claudine creating personal one of kind artwork! Bring a friend! Create decorative papers using a gel plate in order to create an abstract piece of art using collage. The 12 different types of abstract compositions will be discussed and utilized. Students will leave with a completed piece of artwork.

Claudine Diamond is a local self taught artist. She creates art to uplift the spirit, calm the mind, and take the viewer on a whimsical journey to places they never knew they wanted to go.

Supply List

• Gell plate, any size is fine, but 8 x 10 is preferred
• Primary color acrylic paints plus black and white
• Thick gell medium (or modge podge glossy)
• pallet knife
• flat brush
• Brayer
• Baren (or a large flat lid)
• 12×12 wooden panel is the preferred substrate, but paper can be used if preferred
• Collage material: The students can collect junk mail paper and/or bring some copy paper or both. They can also bring stencils, ribbon, string, rubber bands, tissue paper or anything that can leave a mark.

Calvin Liang

We are honored and excited to announce that Master artist Calvin Liang is the juror/judge for the 55^th River Road Show, a national art competition sponsored by AGL at the Louisiana State Archives, August through September 2025.

Born in Canton, China, Calvin began painting in high school and completed his education at Shanghai Academy of Fine Art; recognized as one of the most prestigious and competitive art academies. Currently a resident of Corona, CA, Calvin decided in 2001 to leave his animation career at Disney Studios to become a full-time fine artist. In addition to winning many prestigious awards since, he is a Master member of the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society. Calvin also holds signature membership in California Art Club, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and the American Society of Marine Artists.

Skill level: Intermediate to Advanced

Limited to 13 participants.

In conjunction with the River Road show Calvin will be teaching a three-day workshop in the Studio in the Park, 2490 Silverest Avenue, Baton Rouge. The time will be spent working on a single studio painting based on photos you have taken on location. Calvin will begin with a slideshow to show how he uses the photo as a reference for the painting. Then he will paint a demonstration and spend the remaining time with each student throughout the rest of the each day.

The lessons focused on in the workshop will include:

1. How to plan a composition that will be effective for the artist’s intentions and references
2. How to better see and use warm and cool colors in the landscape
3. How to command hardness and softness of the edges to create space in a painting
4. How to simplify the subject matter through the use of basic design, value, color, and drawing skills
5. How to consider the reasons for different paint surface textures and brushstroke direction over the forms
6. How to get the best possible results in a short time

NOTE: It is recommended that you bring a laptop or tablet (iPad) with your photo reference, or have (large) color prints of your reference.

Description

Schools are closed for Thanksgiving! Kay and Betty have just the thing to occupy those restless minds and hands! Spend a day creating fun holiday projects with your child, grandchild, niece, nephew etc. Start the Holiday Season teaching a child about creating and giving. Teams lead by an adult (one adult and one, two or three children) get inspired with paint, glitter, glue, holiday papers, etc. Each person gets a kit of base materials to make 5 projects (Holiday Apron, Key Chain, Jingle Bell Necklace, Holiday Wreath and Holiday Cards. Adult and child get to decide who will get each finished project. The finished project can be used as gifts for teachers, friends/family, neighbor, sibling, bus driver, etc. or as part of the family’s holiday decoration.

Included in this workshop price are: a kit of base materials and instruction to make 5 projects (Holiday Apron, Key Chain, Jingle Bell Necklace, Holiday Wreath and Holiday
Cards). Other supplies provided by the Instructors for participants to share include: Holiday papers, stickers, paint brushes, paint and Mod Podge.

Description

The workshop will begin with a demonstration. Bring paper for notetaking. Fundamentals of good painting, composition, design, advanced color theory, and technique will be covered. This will be the first day, from 10-noon.

What you paint is your choice. I suggest you work from life – flowers are a great subject. However, you may finish an old painting or begin a new one from photos or iPads. It can be landscape or another subject. Be sure to have good reference materials. I will demonstrate painting a floral subject. A variety of subjects by individuals gives the class more opportunities for learning principles that apply to landscapes also. I hope you bring some landscape and other paintings you have done for the learning critique time that will be scheduled.

My mentor, Carl Thorp, 1912-1989, instilled a great appreciation of having critique and viewing fine art as a means of growing as an artist. Every class consisted of analyzing paintings of world master painters, professionals, and student work in progress. He gave strategies for how each classroom painting could be executed to a successful finish. I also use this in my teaching, and I desire to teach others how to analyze work.

This workshop is to be customized to meet your needs. If possible, I want to see images of your work before the class date so that my lesson plans can be geared toward you. What are your interests? What do you want to learn? What are your strong points? What do you need to do to improve your paintings?

Robert Henri enjoyed different painting styles in his class. I do also. Feel free to use the painting medium of your choice; the characteristics of a good painting apply to all. I will be painting in oils.

Keiko Tanabe

Keiko Tanabe, AWS, NWS, AIS, LPAPA. Often working en plein air, her atmospheric watercolors perfectly capture a sense of time and place. Through her use of color, textures, and signature brushwork, Keiko’s landscapes and cityscapes beautifully convey both the exotic and the simple scenes of the many places she travels. Never attending art school, Keiko took only one drawing class to learn basic technical skills before she started painting in 2005. One year later, after learning basic drawing and watercolor painting skills at a local community school in San Diego, Keiko decided to paint full-time. From then on, she intensely taught herself to be fluent in watercolor painting, just as one would do to master a foreign language. Her subjects include landscape, cityscape, waterscape, and interior scenes, which will be demonstrated in the workshop using representational and impressionistic compositions. Since 2011, Keiko has successfully completed numerous workshops and live demonstrations around the world. She has four DVDs and several books of her art and has been featured in many art magazines.

Do you paint everything that your eyes see? In this class, you will start seeing things differently and learn how to turn reality into a captivating, impressionistic image. The goal is to capture the essence of the subject that conveys a certain mood and atmosphere. Keiko will show you how to take the initial inspiration, through the simplification process, to an expressive painting that is strong in composition and content.

The introduction focuses on the fundamentals including getting to know our materials and seeing things with an artist’s eye. The topics covered in this workshop include a preliminary drawing and composition, a variety of watercolor techniques in paint application and brush handling, what makes a good design, an understanding of the relationship of dark and light values, planning and intuition, and how to edit complex visual information.

Keiko does a daily demonstration with helpful tips and insights. Reference photos will be provided. There will be plenty of one-on-one guidance/critique and a question-and-answer session on a daily basis.

PAINTS
Professional quality brands. My basic palette consists of cobalt blue, phthalo blue, alizarin crimson, orange, cadmium red, burnt sienna, raw sienna, quinacridone gold, lemon yellow, Dioxazine purple, viridian or phthalo green, turquoise, transparent brown, titanium white (all Sennelier). Feel free to bring your own favorites, too. Include one suitable for a monochromatic painting such as neutral tint, gray, sepia.

PALETTE
Any kind. Plenty of mixing areas will be useful.

BRUSHES
Large brushes for a wash such as Escoda Ultimo/Versatil/Aquario (#12 or larger) or something similar. Medium-sized rounds of the same or something similar. Brushes for details such as Escoda Perla (up to #14) or something similar. Other brushes useful: liner, rigger, dagger, flat (hake), Oriental brush, etc.

PAPER
Rough or cold-pressed; 140lb (300gm) or heavier; cotton, professional quality such as Fabriano Artistico, Arches, and Saunders/Waterford. Please plan on using two sheets per day. Also some paper to test colors (old or lesser quality paper will be fine).

PAPER SIZE
¼ sheet or 12″ x 16″ up to half sheet (15″ x 22″) recommended

OTHER (required)
Drawing board, gatorboard, foamcore or anything that supports paper (If you use a block, this will not be necessary.), masking tape, clips or stapler to secure paper to the board, Pencil & eraser, Sketchbook or drawing pad for thumbnail sketches and small studies, Container for washing brushes, towels or sponge
