Larry Downs is a local award winning artist and instructor who has been teaching art techniques in and around Baton Rouge for over 20 years. Larry is an accomplished artist in several mediums including watercolor, graphite drawing, acrylics, and colored pencil. He teaches multiple art levels from beginner as well as advanced. He has been an instructor for the Art Guild of Louisiana for many years, as well as at LSU in the Lagniappe, Leisure, and OLLI adult programs.

Paints should at least be student grade acrylics (Basics, Academy, Amsterdam, Reeves). No Cadmiums!

Sue Wang

Sue Wang is originally from Taiwan, where her education began with handwriting lessons. After coming to the U.S., she attended Chinese Brush Painting classes at LSU and later sought instruction with Margaret Koai. She has since expanded her skills and style as a regular with the Art Guild of Louisiana and Baton Rouge Plein Air, but Chinese Painting has always been her first love.

Description

Come learn the beautiful time-honored technique of Chinese Brush Painting with Sue Wang. Fourteen students will enjoy step-by-step demonstrations from the instructor as they work on three separate pieces: Bamboo, an Orchid, and Chinese Word Art (painting the Chinese word for “Forever”). Students will learn how to hold the brush properly, basic strokes, moisture control, pressure, and ink gradation as they capture and paint traditional forms using outlines and freehand, ultimately becoming confident creating artwork in the Chinese art style. The instructor will provide paper needed to complete the works. Refer to Supply List for additional required items.

• Brushes: Inexpensive bamboo brushes from Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Comes in a pack of 3 different sizes. $7-10
• Two small jars to put water and clean brushes (two preferred – one for washing, one for clean water)
• Some newspaper to put under painting to absorb extra water
• Small bowl or plate to mix ink
• India Ink
• Paper Towels
• Optional: 18″x24″ pad of felt for catching excess water under painting (newsprint works OK too)
• A small weighted object (see #8 in the image). Sue uses a small glass weight to stretch/hold paper.

Sarah Sedwick is a prolific painter of still life in a style she calls “Loose Realism” characterized by expressive brushwork, brilliant color and dynamic compositions. Born in Cleveland, OH, Sarah earned a BFA in illustration from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in 2001. Sarah has been teaching alla prima still life and portrait workshops nationally since 2013 and is the author of Dynamic Still Life for Artists. Paint looser and more confidently during this three-day workshop with Oregon artist Sarah Sedwick. Take a step-by step approach to alla prima oil painting, from black and white studies to brilliant color. Build a beautiful composition with life and movement and get a new perspective on the still life. Instead of struggling with overworking your paintings, practice STOPPING SOONER to keep the freshness you crave in your work.

Working with a split primary palette of six colors and white, explore how creating quick studies and using bigger brushes can loosen up your paintings. Learn the fundamentals of composition design and walk step by step through Sarah’s alla prima process, creating a dynamic still life from start to finish.

Supply List

• Palette – New Wave 11″x16″ white pad disposable palette, or similar
• Palette knife – not a teeny one. You want to be able to scoop up a pile of paint with it. I like the RGM softgrip no. 45 (blue handle).
• Rags or paper towels (blue shop towels are the best!)
• Solvent: Gamsol 16 oz or larger
• Medium: Gamblin Solvent-free-gel or walnut oil (substitutions ok)
• Containers for solvent and medium
• Paint – I use M. Graham brand. Here is my split-primary palette. Substitutions are ok!
  • Titanium white
  • Ivory Black
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Cadmium red (medium or light)
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Viridian – in this workshop, it’s a blue!
  • Cadmium yellow (medium)
  • Hansa yellow
  • Optional colors: yellow ochre, dioxazine purple, Gamblin warm white
• Brushes
  • I use Princeton Summit Series 6100 white Taklon (A good starter kit is a #2 round and a #4 flat.
  • I also use Princeton Aspens (sizes 6-10 flats). Please bring a size 8 or 10 flat brush to class. Any type of brush that you like to use is OK.
• Canvases or other painting surfaces:
  • A pad of canvas paper (such as Yes!), or Arches oil paper (something for quick studies)
  • Both a square canvas and a rectangular canvas or panel – any size you’d like to work on for about 3 hours. You’ll need at least two. 8×8, 10×10, 8×10, 9×12 or larger. I use Raymar – their Arches oil paper panels, and their smooth and medium texture canvas panels.

Description

Join Art Guild of Louisiana artists, Nanci Charpentier and David Gary, for a demo and “paint along”, leaving this workshop with your finished painting. “Introduction to Gouache” is ideal for anyone curious and wanting to learn to paint with gouache and create colorful, fun, contemporary still life and landscape paintings.
Gouache is an often-misunderstood painting medium, with qualities similar to both watercolor and acrylic. Its quick-drying nature allows for layering, making it perfect for both precise detailing and expressive brushwork as well as resulting in beautiful flat and matte-like tones that are characteristic only to gouache.
With our small class size and expert guidance, you’ll be taken step by step through the gouache painting process.

Description

Join Art Guild of Louisiana artists, Nanci Charpentier and David Gary, for an afternoon intensive Alla Prima oil painting workshop. “Alla Prima” means “all at once”. You will be guided through a fun, fast, and ‘no fuss’ approach to oil painting. You will learn a systematic approach to color mixing, color and value judgment, simplification, quick methods to lay in your subject, and working from the general to specific. Join us and experience this fun intro to the fast-paced Alla Prima painting technique and its gestural mark-making qualities.

Paints Include both Warm and Cool Primaries:
