Larry Downs is a local award winning artist and instructor who has been teaching art techniques in and around Baton Rouge for over 20 years. Larry is an accomplished artist in several mediums including watercolor, graphite drawing, acrylics, and colored pencil. He teaches multiple art levels from beginner as well as advanced. He has been an instructor for the Art Guild of Louisiana for many years, as well as at LSU in the Lagniappe, Leisure, and OLLI adult programs.

Become an artist in six weeks with Larry Downs. Learn the fundamentals of both drawing and painting in this innovative new class. Larry will cover all the basics to begin your magical journey.

Paints:
Paints should at least be student grade acrylics (Basics, Academy, Amsterdam, Reeves). No Cadmiums!
- Hansa or Azo Yellow Light
- Medium or Deep (Lemon Yellow)
- Naphthol Red or Naphthol Crimson
- Alizarin Crimson hue
- Pthalo Blue
- Ultramarine Blue
- Titanium White
- Additional (Optional):
- Pthalo Green (optional, but Larry always uses it), or Veridian Green
- Azo Orange or Hansa Orange
- Dioxazine Purple
Medium:
- Liquid Acrylic Medium (gloss)
- Gel Medium (gloss)
- Acrylic Gesso
Brushes:
White nylon (synthetic) and/or watercolor brushes, any brush set should have both flats and rounds
- ¾” flat
- #6 or #8 Round
- #2 or below Round (rigger or liner)
- Nylon utility brush, 1″ and 2″
Other:
- Pencil and paper for note taking
- Three canvas boards – medium size 9″x12″ or 11″x14″
- Palette – plastic white plate or stay wet palette
- Acrylic Paper Pad (9″x12″) Strathmore
- Drawing Board (masonite board with 2 clips) optional
- Two water containers (for brushes)
- Small color wheel
- Palette and/or painting knife

Description
Join Art Guild of Louisiana artist Madhuri Yadlapati for an afternoon workshop in solvent-free painting. No need to buy a whole new set of water-soluble colors, as you will learn how to combine water-soluble oils with traditional oil paints. You will follow a simple method of starting with a water-soluble value sketch, mixing colors using traditional oil paint, and applying color directly using bold brushstrokes. We will use an “Alla Prima” approach of direct painting all at once, and complete a painting of a simple still life from start to finish.
Whether you’re allergic or sensitive to solvents, or just want to be able to paint in oils without the smell of solvent in closed spaces, or are interested in traveling more easily with your oil paints without stopping to buy solvent at your destination, there are many benefits to working in oils without solvent.
Supply List
- Canvas or canvas panel to paint on. A small size like 8×8, 8×10, 10×10, or 9×12 is best.
- 2-3 synthetic brushes, in sizes 4,6, 8 long flats (Rosemary Ivory, Princeton Aspen, Winsor Newton Monarch, or Grey Matters are all recommended)
- Water-soluble paint and solvent-free gel will be provided, but you should bring your own favorite traditional oil colors.
- Option 1: Limited palette: Quinacridone Magenta, Cadmium Yellow Light, Phthalo Blue, and Titanium White (Gamblin or any other brand you like)
- Option 2: Warm and cool of each primary: The colors listed above plus Cadmium Red Light, Indian Yellow, and Ultramarine Blue.
- Paper towels (Viva recommended)
- Palette Knife for mixing colors
- Palette to mix colors on (a 12×16 disposable paper palette works well, like that made by Grey Matters)
- Small jam jar or other container for water
- Plastic grocery bags for trash

This two day workshop is geared to thinking about and making abstract paintings. Learn the difference between: Perceptual and Conceptual. What does Non-Objective mean? What is the Intuitive Process – Instinctive, Automatic Writing?
How to begin? Have pleasure with mark making, shape making and a limited palette. What is MEANING?

Billie has a B.A. in Education and a M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing. She is a Certified Master Teacher for Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and has studied with many nationally recognized artists. Billie presently teaches private studio classes and regional workshops in Drawing, Painting, and Mixed Media and has been on the faculty of Abbey Art Works at St. Joseph Abbey in Covington, LA. Description
Larry is a local artist/instructor who has conducted workshops at LSU in the Lagniappe program. He will cover the “hows” and “whys” of drawing, first through demonstrations, followed by hands on exercises and personal guidance. You will work from still life set ups arranged by Larry using direct lighting.
