Description
With so many paint colors to choose from, why would a painter want to work with a limited palette? One good reason is to create color unity and harmony in your paintings as well as using the “KISS” methodology of “keep it simple, silly”!
A “split primary color palette” refers to a palette of colors with both warm and cool variations of the primaries, red, blue, and yellow. We will learn the power of “less is more” and the advantages gained when understanding how to mix with the limited palette achieving color harmony in your painting.
Learn with Art Guild of Louisiana artist, Nanci Charpentier, as she guides you through exercises in mixing with intention, discussing the properties of color, beautiful grays, and how to avoid “mud” and “chalkiness” in your colors. This class is for oil and acrylic artists.
Supply List
Paints Include both Warm and Cool Primaries:
Option One: 1 Red; 1 Blue, 1 Yellow, 1 White
Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre or Burnt Sienna, Titanium White
OR
Option Two: 2 Reds, 2 Blues, 2 Yellows, 1 White + Bonus Colors
Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cad Red Medium, Alizarine Crimson, Cad Yellow Med, Cad Yellow Light, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Titanium White
Brushes: Size 4, 6, 8 flats, hog hair or synthetic brushes (½” to 1″ wide as various mfr. sizes differ) Suggested brands: Jack Richeson’s Grey Matters, Princeton Aspens, Silver Bristlon flats, sizes 4,6, and 8
Low Odor Mineral spirits (Gamsol), Sealed container for mineral spirits, Paper towels (Viva recommended), Palette knife (Creative Mark T11 is a good size), Grocery trash bags
Easels: If you have a plein air or tabletop easel, please bring. If you do not have one, there are a limited number of easels available for use at the Guild.
